I can’t be the only one to notice the striking similarity between Creature Commandos‘ Rick Flag Sr. and the show’s creator James Gunn.
I mean, just look at these two! Look at them:
Now, I can’t definitively prove James Gunn had Rick Flag designed to have him be his self-insert. But if he did…

If you started your career directing shlocky low-budget grindhouse flicks before being picked up by major movie studios to direct big-budget films…
Which eventually led you to directing a comic book film that many thought was going to flop, but not only did it succeed, but succeeded twice…
To the point where a rival studio decided to make their own knock-off version, only to fail, and then later hire you on to make a good version of that film and succeed…
Which you did because the studio you previously worked at fired you over internet drama that proved to be a real nothingburger…
And then they realized they done goofed and brought you back to end your superhero trilogy with a bang…
Before eventually returning to the other guys to helm their superhero franchise, which will hopefully include a good Superman film…
…well, I think you earned the right to insert a self-insert Gary Stu into your latest project.
